Veinticuatro años después, el Athletic de Bilbao logró el pase para la final de la Copa del Rey en un impresionante partido en el que apabulló al Sevilla, ganador de la competición en 2007, y superó la desventaja del partido de ida.
Fernando Llorente fue el jugador decisivo del encuentro de vuelta disputado el miércoles en San Mamés ante una afición entregada, ya que marcó un gol y creó los otros dos. El 3-0 final les clasificó, tras el 2-1 de la ida en el Sánchez Pizjuán el mes pasado.
Todo Bilbao estaba volcado con el partido, y el ambiente se notó en el terreno de juego. El Sevilla se vio arrinconado desde el pitido inicial, y el primer tanto llegó rápidamente, en el minuto tres, cuando un centro de Llorente fue rematado por Javi Martínez. Andrés Palop rechazó el balón, dejándosela de nuevo al centrocampista, que tuvo un disparo fácil .
Apenas pasada la media hora, Llorente dobló la ventaja con un remate de cabeza a centro de Fran Yeste, y tres minutos después, en el 37, dio un balón a Gaizka Toquero a la izquierda de la zona máxima que el centrocampista aprovechó batiendo a Palop, estableciendo el 3-0 definitivo.
En la segunda parte el equipo vasco mantuvo el nivel, aunque el Sevilla intentó recuperarse infructuosamente, y con el pitido final cientos de aficionados se lanzaron entusiasmados al campo.
La otra semifinal la disputan Barcelona y Mallorca.
La final se disputa 13 de mayo en Valencia.
