El director general del Organismo Internacional de Energía Atómica (OIEA), Mohamed el Baradei, ha emplazado a Estados Unidos a abrir negociaciones directas con Irán para resolver el contencioso nuclear.
"Si Estados Unidos negocia con Corea del Norte, no entiendo por qué no lo hace con Irán", señala el Baradei en una entrevista que publica hoy el diario alemán "Süddeutsche Zeitung".
El Premio Nobel de la Paz insiste que no es "Europa la que está al frente del timón, sino EEUU" y por ese motivo "cuanto antes haya negociaciones directas, antes podrá haber una perspectiva de que se solucione el conflicto".
Pese a todo, el Baradei cree que una solución sostenible sólo puede darse en el marco de una nueva arquitectura de seguridad para Oriente Medio.
"Pero eso sólo será posible teniendo en cuenta el papel regional de Irán y de los otros países de Oriente Próximo; y por supuesto está también el gran elefante de la zona: el programa nuclear de Israel", añade.
A su juicio, en ningún caso puede plantearse una solución militar, porque "un ataque contra las plantas nucleares de Irán como mucho retrasarían su programa de enriquecimiento de uranio, pero convertirían todo Oriente Próximo en una bola de fuego".
El director general de la OIEA apuesta asimismo por una solución diplomática en el caso de Corea del Norte, cuyo gobierno acaba de anunciar su intención de retomar su programa de enriquecimiento, pese a su compromiso a abandonarlo.
