El lateral y centrocampista brasileño Juliano Belletti, de 34 años, anunció hoy su retiro del fútbol debido, según dijo, a problemas físicos.
"Por más que quiera seguir, el cuerpo no deja. Pongo hoy fin a mi carrera como jugador de fútbol profesional por problemas físicos", explicó el exjugador de los equipos españoles Barcelona y Villarreal y el Chelsea inglés en su página de la red social Twitter.
El autor del gol con el que el Barcelona conquistó la Liga de Campeones en 2006, señaló que "el entusiasmo, la fuerza de voluntad y la superación no consiguen ser más fuertes que los dolores".
La retirada de Belletti, quien fue titular de la selección que conquistó el Mundial de 2002 se produce doce días después de haber fichado por el modesto Ceará.
"Fui vencido por el propio cuerpo. Más específicamente, por los tendones de Aquiles. Pido disculpas al Ceará y a sus hinchas por no poder cumplir el contrato y agradezco a los directivos del club por la oportunidad", apuntó.
En 2010, tras su regreso a Brasil, Belletti se coronó campeón de la liga brasileña con el Fluminense, pero no se afianzó como titular en el equipo de Río de Janeiro, y abandonó sus filas en marzo pasado.
Belletti recordó los 22 títulos en sus 16 años como profesional, con 46 goles convertidos y 58 partidos con la selección brasileña.
"Ser comentarista deportivo, auxiliar técnico o prestar consultoría para jugadores del fútbol profesional son las opciones que preparé para seguir a partir de este momento", dijo Belletti sobre su futuro.
