A pocos días del comienzo de la temporada futbolística, el símil era obligado. 'Los bancos, al igual que los clubes de fútbol, tienen que contratar a los mejores. Una de mis responsabilidades como consejero delegado de Barclays en nombre de mis clientes y accionistas es reunir al mejor equipo posible', dijo John Varley. Y no va a reparar en gastos. Entre salario y bonus (sueldo variable), cada integrante del equipo de banca de inversión de la entidad recibirá por el trabajo de los últimos meses una media de 290.000 euros.
Barclays y HSBC ya han vuelto a beneficios, con casi 3.500 millones de euros en el primer semestre gracias al negocio de banca de inversión. El jefe de este departamento en Barclays, el antes carismático y ahora aborrecido Bob Diamond, se embolsará 42 millones por acciones que le costaron 12 millones, dentro del paquete de opciones sobre acciones de su remuneración.
Las entidades están defendiendo el bonus como gancho indispensable para reclutarincluso a jóvenes promesas.
El Gobierno y la oposición creen que estas cifras y declaraciones son poco menos que una provocación. No en vano, el Estado se gastó 1,4 billones en reflotar el sistema financiero. Según un estudio independiente, la banca pagará bonus este año por valor de 4.600 millones.
Los bancos tienen ahora pocos defensores. 'Su avaricia y los riesgos excesivos nos llevaron a esta crisis, que nos está costando millones de empleos y a mucha gente, sus casas', dijo el portavoz de los liberales demócratas, Vince Cable. Ataques similares han surgido de los laboristas y conservadores, pero el Gobierno no se decide a cambiar las reglas del juego. El Ministerio de Hacienda y el Banco de Inglaterra piden más transparencia.
