El ex viceprimer ministro iraquí Tareq Aziz, el rostro público del régimen de Sadam Husein, fue condenado el miércoles a 15 años de cárcel por su papel en la ejecución de decenas de comerciantes que rompieron los controles de precios estatales en 1992.
El tribunal también condenó a dos hermanastros de Sadam a muerte en la horca por su implicación en el mismo asunto, juzgado como un "crimen contra la humanidad".
El veredicto llega menos de dos semanas después de que el mismo Alto Tribunal absolviera a Aziz de haber participado de alguna forma en el asesinato y desplazamiento de musulmanes chiíes en 1999, un juicio en el que el primo de Sadam Ali Hasan Al Majid recibió su tercera condena de muerte.
Majid, también conocido como "Alí el químico" por su implicación en el uso de gas venenoso para matar a kurdos en los años 80, fue condenado a 15 años por el mismo caso de los comerciantes.
Los mercaderes fueron ejecutados tras ser acusados de elevar los precios de productos básicos, rompiendo el control de los precios en un momento en el que Irak se enfrentaba con sanciones de la ONU por su invasión de Kuwait en 1990.
