Reguladores de salud de EstadosUnidos dijeron el miércoles que esperan conocer los resultadosde los análisis realizados a un fungicida ilegal presente en eljugo de naranja a fines de esta semana.
La Administración de Alimentos y Medicamentos de EstadosUnidos (FDA, por su sigla en inglés) dijo que analizaría todo eljugo de naranja que llega a Estados Unidos debido alcarbendazim, un químico que es ilegal en los cítricosestadounidenses pero es muy utilizado en Brasil para combatir elmoho en los naranjos.
"Esperamos tener algunos resultados de calidad comprobadosal final de la semana", dijo Siobhan DeLancey, portavoz de laFDA.
Las noticias iniciales de los análisis llevaron el martes alos futuros del jugo de naranja a un máximo histórico, ya quelos operadores mostraron inquietud de que la FDA podría prohibirtodo el jugo de naranja proveniente de Brasil, que abastece amás de una décima parte de suministro de Estados Unidos.
Las autoridades dijeron que los bajos niveles del fungicidaque se encuentran en el jugo hasta el momento no eran peligrososy estaban muy por debajo de cualquier cosa que pudiera serconsiderada como un riesgo para la salud.
Marcas como Tropicana, de PepsiCo Inc, y Minute Maid, deCoca-Cola Co, pueden utilizar una mezcla de jugos provenientesde Brasil y Estados Unidos.
