El primer ministro nipón, Yasuo Fukuda, llegó hoy a Tokio procedente de Rusia donde acordó con el presidente ruso, Vladimir Putin, continuar las conversaciones sobre la disputa territorial de las islas Kuriles.
Según la agencia local de noticias Kyodo, Fukuda llegó hoy al mediodía al aeropuerto de Haneda, cerca de Tokio, tras haber realizado una visita oficial de dos días a Rusia, durante la cual se reunió por separado con Putin, y con el presidente ruso electo, Dmitri Medvédev.
Además de la disputa sobre las islas Kuriles, Fukuda y Putin acordaron elevar sus relaciones bilaterales a una "dimensión más elevada" y establecer un proyecto conjunto para la exploración de nuevos pozos de petróleo en Siberia Oriental.
Las islas Kuriles, conocidas en Japón como los Territorios del Norte, han impedido que Japón y Rusia firmaran un tratado de paz para poner un final oficial a la II Guerra Mundial.
Rusia desea la contribución japonesa en forma de inversión para desarrollar el remoto este de su país y para mejorar su eficiencia energética.
