Un gel especial enriquecido conenzimas y factores de crecimiento pudo ayudar a crear nuevosvasos sanguíneos alrededor de una arteria bloqueada en ratas,lo que ofrecería una novedosa forma de generar un bypassnatural, informaron investigadores estadounidenses.
El gel parece mantener en el lugar los compuestosnecesarios hasta que los vasos circundantes puedan formarnuevas ramas en la zona deseada, explicaron los investigadoresen un informe publicado en Proceedings of the National Academyof Sciences.
"Tienen todas las características de los vasos sanguíneos",dijo Andrés García, del Instituto de Tecnología de Georgia,quien dirigió el estudio.
La tecnología también podría ser utilizada para brindar unaespecie de zona de anidación a las células pancreáticas paratratar a pacientes con diabetes tipo 1 o a aquellos queperdieron el órgano segregador de insulina, señaló García enuna entrevista telefónica.
El gel, denominado hidrogel de glicol de polietileno, portavarios compuestos hallados naturalmente en el cuerpo, incluidasenzimas que ayudan a incentivar el crecimiento de vasossanguíneos.
Cuando los vasos sanguíneos de ratas fueron anudados parasimular un coágulo en la pierna, el gel enriquecido restauró elflujo sanguíneo en dos semanas, indicó el equipo de García.
Los investigadores, financiados por los InstitutosNacionales de Salud de Estados Unidos, la Fundación deInvestigación de la Diabetes Juvenil y la AsociaciónEstadounidense del Corazón, también están trabajando paraemplear el gel para crear una zona fortalecida donde implantarcélulas del páncreas productoras de insulina.
El equipo aún no está trabajando con una compañía, peroespera que la técnica pueda ayudar a millones de pacientesalgún día.
La pérdida de suministro de sangre por un bloqueo o dañoarterial causa la muerte u hospitalización sólo en EstadosUnidos de 8 millones de pacientes con enfermedad arterialperiférica, que afecta fundamentalmente las piernas, y de 16,8millones de personas con dolencia coronaria.
