La película "Los girasoles ciegos", de José Luis Cuerda, representará a España en los Oscar de Hollywood, tras imponerse a las otras finalistas -"Siete mesas de billar francés", de Gracia Querejeta; y "Sangre de mayo" de Garci- y lo hará en el apartado de Mejor Película de Habla Extranjera.
La actriz Belén Rueda, acompañada por presidenta de la Academia de Cine, Ángeles González Sinde, dio lectura al acta con el resultado, en el que los más de mil académicos, en una segunda votación, eligieron el filme de Cuerda y descartaron a los otros que componían la terna finalista.
