Israel anunció el lunes los planes para construir casi 700 nuevos hogares para judíos en áreas de la ocupada Cisjordania que considera parte de Jerusalén, una ciudad que Israel ha excluido de una moratoria limitada sobre la construcción de asentamientos.
Estados Unidos ha expresado su disgusto cuando Israel anunció anteriores planes de construcción dentro y alrededor de la zona árabe conocida como Jerusalén Este, que los palestinos reclaman para convertirla en la capital de un futuro estado en la Franja de Gaza y Cisjordania.
En el nuevo proyecto, el Ministerio de Vivienda de Israel ha iniciado el concurso para licitar la construcción de 198 viviendas en Pisgat Zeev, 377 en Neve Yaakov y 117 en Har Homa, asentamientos próximos a Jerusalén que fueron construidos en un terreno capturado en la guerra de los Seis Días.
El plan fue anunciado dentro de un proyecto de mayor envergadura para construir varios miles de viviendas en Israel.
Un portavoz del presidente palestino, Mahmud Abas, condenó la iniciativa diciendo que la construcción en el territorio ocupado en 1967 era ilegal.
Israel ha declarado que todo Jerusalén es su capital eterna e indivisible, una reivindicación que no ha sido reconocida internacionalmente.
Bajo presión de EEUU, el primer ministro israelí, Benjamin Netanyahu, anunció en noviembre una congelación de 10 meses en el inicio de nuevas obras en asentamientos de Cisjordania pero dijo que no incluiría las fronteras municipales que Israel ha definido para Jerusalén.
El presidente palestino ha pedido un completo alto en las actividades de asentamientos, diciendo que no reanudaría las conversaciones de paz hasta que Israel lo hiciera.
Israel y Estados Unidos han instado a Abas a volver a la mesa de negociación, suspendida durante el pasado año, sin condiciones previas.
