El primer ministro iraquí, Nuri al Maliki, ha exigido la disolución de la milicia "Ejército del Mahdi", leal al clérigo chií Muqtada al Sadr, como condición para permitir a sus seguidores que participen en el proceso político.
"Se ha decidido que ya no tienen derecho a participar en el proceso político o en las próximas elecciones a menos que acaben con el 'Ejército del Mahdi'", señaló Maliki en una entrevista con la televisión estadounidense CNN.
El ultimátum de Maliki fue rechazado de inmediato por los "sadristas", que calificaron esa amenaza como "inconstitucional", según declaró Salah al Obeidi, portavoz de Sadr, en el mismo programa de la CNN.
El "Ejército del Mahdi", brazo militar de los "sadristas", se resiste a abandonar las armas después de los últimos enfrentamientos entre la milicia y las tropas gubernamentales en la ciudad meridional de Basora, en los que murieron al menos 200 milicianos.
Se desconoce el número de integrantes del "Ejército del Mahdi", aunque, según informaciones no oficiales, podrían llegar a los 25.000 y están especialmente presentes en la barriada de Ciudad Sadr, en el este de Bagdad.
Según señalaron hoy observadores en Irak, las palabras de Maliki podrían suponer el estallido de nuevos enfrentamientos entre los dos bandos.
