El comisario de Comercio de la Unión Europea, Peter Mandelson, advirtió hoy de que este año es clave para la conclusión de un acuerdo en la Organización Mundial del Comercio.
En una intervención en la cumbre de líderes progresistas que se celebra hoy en un hotel a las afueras de Londres, Mandelson expresó su esperanza de que en mayo se produzca el fuerte avance que todos esperan en las negociaciones multilaterales.
Las negociaciones finales de la ronda iniciada en Doha deberían tener lugar con el presidente George W. Bush todavía en la Casa Blanca, dijo Mandelson, según el cual "si no se llega a un acuerdo en el, 2008, no lo habrá en el 2009".
El comisario británico recordó que en la primera mitad del próximo año habrá un cambio de presidente en Estados Unidos mientras que en el segundo semestre se renovará la Comisión Europea, lo que impediría concluir la ronda.
La presidente chilena, Michelle Bachelet, señaló, por su parte, que el libre comercio es una herramienta esencial en la lucha contra la pobreza y a favor del desarrollo.
Bachelet destacó la importancia de la integración entre los países en desarrollo en materia de infraestructuras y energía porque juntos podrán negociar desde una posición de mayor fuerza frente a las actuales "asimetrías", que producen resultados desfavorables para aquellos.
Esos países, dijo la presidenta chilena, necesitan ayuda para el desarrollo, pero lo más importante, agregó, es que se eliminen las barreras al comercio, que tanto perjudican a los países pobres.
El Alto Comisario para los Refugiados de la ONU, Antonio Guterres, advirtió por su parte del peligro que el encarecimiento de los alimentos básicos puede tener para la estabilidad social y la democracia en muchos países del mundo en desarrollo.
El primer ministro noruego, Jens Stoltenberg, coincidió con Guterres en que uno de los mayores peligros para los países en desarrollo es el alto precio de los alimentos.
