Una propuesta para convertir la ciudad de los canales, Venecia, en un parque temático al estilo Disney ha ganado un premio de una venerable academia veneciana a pesar de las objeciones del alcalde de la ciudad.
El economista británico John Kay ganó 5.000 euros el fin de semana por el casi bicentenario Istituto Veneto por una artículo en que defendía que a Venecia le iría mejor como parque temático, con un precio de entrada de 50 euros.
"Sólo un hombre puede salvar Venecia: Mickey Mouse", era el titular del artículo de Kay explicando el concepto, publicado en marzo por el diario británico The Times.

"Si lo primero que los visitantes recuerdan de Venecia es la belleza del lugar, lo segundo es la frecuencia con la que les timan", escribió.
"Disney quiere que sus invitados lo pasen bien porque les importa que vuelvan. La mayoría de los de Venecia no regresan".
La decisión de la academia de premiar a Kay por su artículo ha molestado al alcalde de la ciudad italiana, un puesto que Kay dijo debería ser sustituido por un gestor de parque temático.
"Encuentro sencillamente cómico que una institución cultural veneciana las imágenes más 'kitsch' sobre Venecia y su futuro", dijo el alcalde Massimo Cacciari.
El Istituto Veneto dijo que no era partidario de convertir Venecia en parque temático, pero describió el trabajo de Kay como una provocadora crítica sobre la difícil economía turística de la ciudad.
