Los europeos no pueden votar en las elecciones presidenciales estadounidenses del próximo noviembre, peromuchos querrían, y los ministros de Exteriores del bloque decidieron que al menos apostarían sobre ello a puerta cerrada.
Durantes las conversaciones informales celebradas en Aviñón, Francia, sobre el futuro de las relaciones transatlánticas, el ministro británicode Exteriores, David Miliband, pidió a sus colegas de la Unión Europea que apostaran quién ganaría las elecciones del 4 de noviembre.
"Hizo circular un papel. Yo le di mi respuesta. Creo que todo el mundo lo hizo, ¿no?", dijo el ministro francés del ramo, Bernard Kouchner, enrueda de prensa el sábado, negándose a dar después el resultado.
El responsable de Politica Exterior de la UE, Javier Solana, siempre diplomático, se negó a apostar, lo que llevó a Kouchner a exclamar:"¡Cobarde!".
El ministro polaco Radoslaw Sikorski contó a los periodistas que él también había votado, pero al igual que su colega francés no quiso decirsi ganó el republicano John McCain o el demócrata Barack Obama.
Kouchner dijo que la iniciativa de Miliband había sido bien recibida porque relajó el ambiente en una cumbre que en momentos fue tensa porlas diferencias sobre el trato hacia Rusia.
Otros titulares de Exteriores, entre ellos la austriaca Ursula Plassnik y el luxemburgués Jean Asselborn, dijeron que la propuesta fue sólo unabrama. "No ocurrió nada", dijo Asselborn a Reuters.
