El número uno del mundo Rafael Nadal resistió el lunes la fuerte oposición del portugués Frederico Gil para ganar 7-5 y 6-3 y asegurarse una plaza en los octavos de final del abierto Sony Ericsson que se disputa en Miami.
El balear rompió dos veces el servicio de su rival en el primer set para llevarse la manga 7-5, y después, cuando un decidido y agresivo Gil le hizo un temprano 'break' y se situó 2-0 en el segundo, Nadal tomó las riendas del partido y remontó situándose 6-3.
Nadal disputará la siguiente ronda con el ganador del encuentro que enfrentará al ruso Igor Andreev y al suizo Stanislas Wawrinka.

En otro partido de la jornada, el sexto cabeza de serie, el argentino, Juan Martín del Potro, avanzó de ronda con una victoria por 6-4 y 6-1 sobre el serbio Janko Tipsarevic.
