El presidente de EEUU, Barack Obama, celebrará el próximo 28 de noviembre una cumbre con la Unión Europea (UE) a la que asistirá el presidente del Consejo Europeo, Herman Van Rompuy, el presidente de la Comisión Europea, José Manuel Durao Barroso, y la alta representante de Exteriores, Catherine Ashton.
Los cuatro líderes se reunirán en la Casa Blanca en la primera cumbre entre ambas potencias desde la que mantuvieron el 20 de noviembre de 2010 en Lisboa, según un comunicado.
La reunión tendrá lugar apenas tres semanas después de la cumbre del G-20, prevista para el 3 y 4 de noviembre en Cannes (Francia), donde se espera que la UE y Estados Unidos aporten ideas para mejorar la estabilidad económica tras el acuerdo alcanzado la semana pasada para solventar la crisis de deuda en la zona euro.
La economía mundial será uno de los temas principales que tratarán el 28 de noviembre los cuatro dirigentes, que, según la Casa Blanca, analizarán los esfuerzos mutuos para "fortalecer los lazos económicos y el crecimiento".
En el terreno político, tendrá cabida en la cumbre el "trabajo conjunto" de EEUU y la UE para "apoyar la democracia y la prosperidad en los alrededores de Europa, en Oriente Medio y el Norte de África", indica el comunicado.
Además, debatirán sobre su "continua coordinación con respecto a Irán" y su "compromiso con una mejor aplicación de las leyes internacionales y cooperación antiterrorista".
Las relaciones entre Estados Unidos y la UE se han enfriado relativamente a raíz del declive de la situación económica en Europa, a quien Obama llegó a acusar de estar reaccionando con lentitud y estar "asustando al mundo", unas declaraciones que fueron rápidamente tachadas de paternalistas por Rompuy.
