El presidente de Estados Unidos, Barack Obama, se ha puesto en contacto con su homólogo ruso, Dmitri Medvédev, para pedirle ayuda en la detención del programa nuclear de Irán, según informa The New York Times, que cita fuentes oficiales.
De ese modo, Obama habría enviado una carta personal y secreta a Medvédev el mes pasado con la cual pretende llegar a un acuerdo para fijar actuaciones sobre Teheran ofreciéndose, incluso, a renunciar al proyecto de escudo antimisiles en Europa.
Un oficial del ejército estadounidense confirmó a la agencia Reuters la existencia de la carta. 'Podemos confirmar que el presidente Obama envió una carta al presidente ruso'. 'En la carta se hablaban de diferentes temas y en particular de la defensa de misiles y de cómo se relacione con la amenaza iraní', dijo el oficial.
Moscú no ha respondido todavía a la oferta de Obama, pero lo que sí está claro es que Rusia se ha opuesto siempre al despliegue de un sistema de misiles en Polonia y República Checa que sirva de escudo para Estados Unidos, proyecto iniciado por la anterior administración del ex presidente estadounidense George W. Bush.
Asimismo, el diario americano recoge que una fuente oficial rusa habría señalado que el ministro de Exteriores ruso, Sergei Lavrov, podría hablar de este asunto con Hillary Clinton, la secretaria de Estado de Estados Unidos, ahora por tierras israelíes, durante su próximo encuentro este viernes en Ginebra.
Por otro lado, el rotativo también recuerda que Obama y Medvédev se verán por primera vez el 2 de abril en Londres en la próxima cumbre del G-20.
