Tommy Robredo cayó el domingo eliminado del Abierto de tenis de Miami por 7-5 y 6-3 frente al estadounidense Taylor Dent, que se enfrentará en tercera ronda del torneo al suizo Roger Federer, segundo preclasificado, que venció con comodidad por 6-4 y 6-1 al alemán Nicolas Kiefer.
Novak Djokovic, tercer favorito, tampoco tuvo inconveniente para eliminar por 6-4 y 6-1 al francés Paul-Henri Mathieu, y se enfrentará en la siguiente ronda al checo Tomas Berdych, que derrotó al estadounidense James Blake por 6-4, 6-7 (3-7) y 6-3.
El estadounidense Andy Roddick sobrevivió a un electrizante 'tiebreak' en el primer set ante el ruso Dmitry Tursunov, al que venció por 7-6 (11-9) y 6-2.
En el partido más emocionante de la jornada, el francés Gael Monfils derrotó por 5-7, 7-5 y 7-6 (7-3) al ruso Marat Safin. El francés, cuyo próximo rival será Roddick, se repuso tras estar en desventaja 2-5 en el tercer set y tras salvar dos puntos de partido se quedó con el duelo.
En el cuadro femenino, cayeron tres de las máximas favoritas, entre ellas la rusa Dinara Safina, número dos del mundo.
Safina cayó por 6-1 y 6-4 ante la australiana Samantha Stosur, y describió su partido, que tuvo que ser interrumpido por la lluvia, como un "desastre".
Stosur, número 42 del ránking mundial, se enfrentará en la cuarta ronda a la francesa Amelie Mauresmo, que venció en tres sets a a la italiana Flavia Pennetta.
Otra de las sorpresas fue la de la húngara Agnes Szavay, que venció a la serbia Ana Ivanovic, sexta favorita, por 6-4, 4-6 y 6-1 en otro partido que sufrió interrupciones por la lluvia.
La rusa Vera Zvonareva, séptima preclasificada, resultó eliminada por la china Li Na, que ganó 6-4, 3-6 y 6-2.
La suerte sí sonrió a las hermanas Williams. Venus derrotó a la alemana Anna-Lena Groenefeld por 7-5 y 6-3, mientras que su hermana Serena, número uno del mundo, eliminó casi por el mismo marcador a la china Peng Shuai, a quien venció por 7-5 y 6-2.
