Sotheby's retiró el miércoles un cuadro de la subasta de los objetos de la residencia en el Lago Como del fallecido diseñador italiano Gianni Versace porque sospecha que la pintura puede ser robada.
Un descendiente directo de la persona retratada contactó con el Registro de Arte Perdido, entidad que ayuda en la búsqueda de obras de arte y antigüedades perdidas o robadas, después de ver una fotografía de la "desaparecida" obra en el diario Evening Standard de Londres.
El cuadro recientemente descubierto del artista alemán del siglo XVIII Johann Zoffany titulado "Portrait of Major George Maule" (Retrato del comandante George Maule), era uno de los principales objetos de la subasta, cuya recaudación se esperaba que llegara a los 2-3 millones de libras esterlinas (2,1-3,1 millones de euros).
Es el único retrato conocido de un grupo de cuatro obras creadas por el artista durante una breve estancia en Madras en 1783 y estaba valorado en 40.000-60.000 libras esterlinas.
"El Registro de Arte Perdido confirma que el lote 72 (...) ha sido retirado con el consentimiento completo de Sotheby's", señaló la entidad en una declaración.
"La familia contactó al Registro de Arte Perdido y envió una fotografía del retrato colgado sobre la repisa de la chimenea antes de desaparecer", explicó. "El Registro de Arte Perdido está ayudando a la familia a buscar la procedencia del retrato para establecer su legítimo propietario", agregó.
