La Unión Europea dijo el viernes que estaba "prácticamente lista" para enviar unos200 observadores civiles a Georgia, mientras que Alemania e Italia pidieron una investigación sobre el estallido delconflicto en Osetia del Sur.
El jefe de política exterior de la UE, Javier Solana, dijo que el bloque está cerca de acordar una misión deobservación civil con la que espera convencer a Rusia de replegar sus fuerzas a las posiciones que ocupaban antesdel conflicto.
"Esto está prácticamente listo", dijo Solana a periodistas durante una reunión de ministros de Exteriores de la UEen Aviñón, Francia.
"Lo único por ver es cuándo, cómo, en qué momento y bajo qué mandato, y eso será decidido después del lunes",agregó Solana, refiriéndose a un viaje del presidente francés Nicolas Sarkozy a Moscú, programado para la próximasemana.
Un diplomático francés dijo que el plan era desplegar los primeros observadores a partir de octubre, inicialmenteen el centro de Georgia y avanzar progresivamente hacia Osetia del Sur.
"Los rusos dijeron que no se moverían en tanto no haya un mecanismo internacional. Debemos decirles que loseuropeos están listos para desplegarse (...) eso es lo que Sarkozy le dirá el lunes a los rusos", dijo la fuente.
El objetivo de la misión de la UE sería verificar que todas las partes respetan un acuerdo de paz alcanzado con lamediación de Francia y supervisar el regreso a casa de miles de desplazados por el conflicto, dijeron funcionarios.
Moscú mantiene tropas en "zonas de seguridad" en territorio georgiano más allá de Osetia del Sur y Abjasia, otraregión rebelde.
Los líderes de la UE advirtieron esta semana al Kremlin que podrían postergar las conversaciones previstas paraeste mes sobre un pacto entre el bloque y Rusia, pero evitaron sanciones más duras en medio de divisiones internassobre cómo entenderse con el mayor proveedor de energía de Europa.
