Un equipo de investigadores españoles explica hoy cómo uno de los seres más simples que existen, la bacteria Mycoplasma pneumoniae, es capaz de emular a formas de vida más complejas a pesar de tener menos genes. Estas bacterias, que son capaces de reproducirse por sí mismas, son muy útiles para determinar los ingredientes esenciales de la vida y aclarar su origen en la Tierra.
Expertos del Centro de Regulación Genómica de Barcelona y el Laboratorio Europeo de Biología Molecular de Heidelberg (Alemania) detallan hoy en Science la lista completa de ARN y proteínas (transcriptoma y proteoma) que producen los 689 genes de M. pneumoniae. También describen todos los procesos químicos de su metabolismo (metaboloma).
Los datos revelan una bacteria mucho más compleja de lo que podría esperarse por su reducido genoma y que es capaz de realizar procesos que, hasta ahora, estaban reservados a las eucariotas, células más complejas que tienen núcleo. El estudio señala que la M. pneumoniae consigue emular a las eucariotas sacándole el máximo partido a su genoma. Por ejemplo, sus genes no actúan siempre en grupo como en otras bacterias, y producen proteínas que realizan varias funciones a la vez.
