El multimillonario empresario Dennis Tito ha anunciado que enviará una misión tripulada al planeta rojo en 2018, a través de la 'Fundación Inspiración Marte' que él mismo ha creado. Tito ha indicado que, probablemente el viaje de ida y vuelta a Marte, que aproximadamente dura entre 2 y 3 años, en este caso sería de 501 días.
Según ha adelantado los medios de comunicación de Estados Unidos, Tito explicará en una rueda de prensa, que tendrá lugar el próximo 3 de marzo, que la misión partiría de la Tierra el 5 de enero de 2018 y llegaría a Marte el 20 de agosto de ese mismo año. El regreso está programado para el 21 de mayo de 2019.

Con la que será la primera misión privada a Marte, Tito recordará su labor en la NASA, cuando trabajó en el equipo que envió las naves Mariner 4 y 9 a sobrevolar el planeta rojo en los años 60 y 70. De hecho, Mariner 4 fue el primer sobrevuelo con éxito a Marte en 1965, emitiendo las primeras imágenes de otro planeta desde el espacio profundo.
