Silvio Berlusconi dijo de él que se parecía más a un capo de un campo de concentración que a un político de izquierdas y Jean-Marie Le Pen, el histórico líder del Frente Nacional francés, aseguró que 'tiene la cara de Lenin y habla como Hitler'. Odiado por la derecha por sus intervenciones impetuosas y poco diplomáticas, Martin Schulz se convertirá hoy, salvo sorpresa, en el nuevo presidente del Parlamento Europeo.
Aunque la votación es secreta, los grupos conservador y socialista, mayoritarios en la Cámara, pactaron al inicio de la legislatura repartirse el cargo. Schulz, un socialista alemán de 56 años, sucederá en el cargo al conservador polaco Jerzy Buzek, que se ha caracterizado por la discreción.
El cargo de presidente de la Eurocámara es poco más que honorífico, pero Schulz se ha declarado 'preparado para pelear' en una de las entrevistas recientes. Según él, 'la Eurocámara no puede quedar al margen' del proceso de fortalecimiento de las instituciones europeas, protagonizado por los gobiernos bajo la batuta del eje franco-alemán.
Shulz cuenta con dos oponentes del grupo liberal y de la derecha euroescéptica, pero fuentes parlamentarias esperan una votación de trámite por el aval de los dos grandes partidos.
La Eurocámara cuenta desde ayer con una nueva europarlamentaria, la gallega Ana Miranda (BNG), quien sustituye a Oriol Junqueras (ERC) en el escaño que ambas formaciones comparten con Aralar y la Chunta Aragonesista. La política nacionalista, experta en Derecho Comunitario, se integrará en la Alianza Libre Europea.
