El estado de Nueva York está a un solo paso de aprobar la ley de matrimonio homosexual, después de que la asamblea estatal haya votado a favor del proyecto de ley, que ahora pasará al Senado.
De hecho, allí será donde este viernes se decida si finalmente el matrimonio gay en Nueva York es una realidad o no. Solo un voto favorable separa a los homosexuales neoyorquinos de equipararse con los de Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont y el distrito de Columbia, donde el matrimonio entre personas del mismo sexo ya es legal.
'Solo estados de segunda clase tienen ciudadanos de segunda clase', ha asegurado Charles Lavine, uno de los demócratas que votó a favor de legalizar el matrimonio homosexual en la asamblea y que salió adelante por 80 a 63 votos.
Será el Senado quien decida mañana si da luz verde a esta medida. Ya en diciembre 2009, el Senado, entonces dominado por los demócratas, rechazó el matrimonio homosexual. Curiosamente, ahora que los republicanos son mayoría, está más cerca de una futura aprobación, dado que 31 de los 62 senadores han mostrado públicamente su apoyo.
El senador Ruben Diaz es el único demócrata que ya ha dicho que votará en contra, mientras que los republicanos Jim Alesi y Roy McDonald lo harán a favor.
