El 13,5 por ciento de las mujeres españolas de entre 25 y 54 años no trabajó en 2009 por motivos familiares, según datos publicados hoy por Eurostat, la oficina comunitaria de estadística.
España se sitúa por encima de la media comunitaria, del 10,1 por ciento, aunque está lejos de la tasa de Malta (40,4%), el Estado miembro con un mayor porcentaje de la Unión Europea (UE), seguido de Grecia (16,2%), Luxemburgo (15,6%), Chipre (15,2%) e Italia (15,0%).
En el otro extremo se encuentra Suecia, donde sólo el 1,8% de las mujeres no participó en 2009 en el mercado laboral debido a sus responsabilidades familiares, seguido de Eslovenia (3,6%) y Lituania (5,5%).
Los motivos familiares -que incluyen el embarazo, el cuidado de hijos o de un miembro de la familia enfermo- constituyen la principal causa de inactividad de las mujeres, según destaca Eurostat.
En 2009, el 10,1% de las mujeres europeas no trabajó por razones de este tipo, es decir, la mitad del total de ciudadanas comunitarias de entre 25 y 54 años que no participó en el mercado laboral (22,1%).
En España, la tasa total de inactividad entre las mujeres de estas edades ascendió al 23,3%.
Las mayores tasas de inactividad femenina de la UE correspondieron a países mediterráneos como Malta (51,1%) e Italia (35,5%).
En cuanto a la franja de edad de entre 55 y 64 años, la tasa media de inactividad femenina en la UE se elevó en 2009 al 60,1%, mientras que en España fue ligeramente superior (64%).
Los porcentajes de los estados miembros oscilaron entre el 87,9% de Malta y el 30,1% de Suecia.
