El actor Dennis Hopper, que está postrado en cama, anunció el lunes que ha pedido el divorcio de su quinta esposa mientras lucha en lo que su publicista describió como "una valiente batalla" contra el cáncer de próstata.
"Han estado teniendo problemas y quiere paz y tranquilidad", comentó a Reuters su portavoz Alex Hitz.
La notificación legal se realizó el pasado jueves. Hopper, de 73 años, y su esposa Victoria Duffy tienen una hija de 6 años.
Hitz afirmó que Hopper está "totalmente consciente" después de iniciar una nueva ronda de quimioterapia.
"Le deseo lo mejor a Victoria, pero sólo quiero pasar estos difíciles días rodeado de mis hijos y amigos cercanos", se citó al actor en un comunicado.
Duffy sigue viviendo en la casa del artista, en el barrio costero de Venice, mientras se resuelve el tema de la residencia, indicó el portavoz. La reclamación de divorcio no afectaría lo que recibiría Duffy de las propiedades del artista según su acuerdo prenupcial, añadió.
Hopper, que dirigió y protagonizó la cinta de culto de 1969 "Easy Rider", recibió el diagnóstico de cáncer el pasado septiembre.
En una carrera muy variada que abarca más de 50 años, ha aparecido junto a su mentor, James Dean, en "Rebelde sin causa" y "Gigante", y ha interpretado a maníacos en "Apocalypse Now", "Terciopelo azul" y "Speed".
Fue nominado al Oscar en dos ocasiones, por escribir "Easy Rider" con los coprotagonistas Peter Fonda y Terry Southern, y por el inusual retrato de un entrenador de baloncesto de instituto alcohólico en el drama de 1986 "Hoosiers: Más que ídolos".
Su vida doméstica nunca ha sido aburrida. Uno de sus matrimonios fue un enlace de ocho días en 1970 con Michelle Phillips, del grupo "Mamas and Papas". Philips dijo después a Vanity Fair que había sufrido un tratamiento "atroz". Además, Hopper le rompió la nariz a su primera esposa, Brooke Hayward, después de una noche de drogas.
