Al menos doce personas murieron hoy y otras 25 resultaron heridas en un atentado suicida contra una mezquita suní en la localidad de Tel Afar, 450 kilómetros al noroeste de Bagdad, informaron fuentes policiales.
Las fuentes explicaron que un terrorista suicida detonó un cinturón de explosivos adosado a su cuerpo, en medio de los fieles congregados para el rezo musulmán del viernes en la mezquita de Al Takua (piedad), en un barrio residencial de mayoría turcomana.
Algunos de los heridos están graves, por lo que las fuentes no descartaron que el número de víctimas mortales pueda aumentar.
Varias ambulancias se trasladaron al lugar de la explosión para evacuar a los heridos.
Situada en la provincia septentrional de Nínive, Tel Afar, donde conviven árabes, turcomanos y kurdos, ha sido en el pasado escenario de algunos de los ataques más mortíferos en Irak.
Por otro lado, un dirigente tribal, identificado como jeque Hatim al Abás al Nadawi, falleció hoy acribillado a tiros cerca de su domicilio en el municipio de Haimús, a unos 60 kilómetros al norte de Baquba, capital de la provincia nororiental de Diyala.
Al Nadawi, jefe de la tribu Nadawin, estaba considerado como un duro oponente de la red terrorista Al Qaeda en Irak, aunque no pertenecía a ningún Consejo de Salvación, milicias tribales suníes que colaboran con el Gobierno iraquí en su lucha contra la insurgencia.
Precisamente hoy, al menos dieciocho supuestos militantes de Al Qaeda fueron detenidos en Diyala en dos redadas llevadas a cabo por soldados estadounidenses e iraquíes.
