El alemán Markus Fothen, del Gerolsteiner, ha sido el vencedor de la quinta etapa de la Vuelta a Suiza disputada a través de 190 kilómetros entre Domat-Ems y Caslano, en la que ha llegado escapado por delante del ruso Sergei Ivanov (Astana), y tras la que Igor Antón (Euskaltel) ha logrado mantener el jersey amarillo de líder.
Fothen entró en solitario con un tiempo de 4h47:30, después de que su compañero de escapada, el luxemburgués Frank Schleck (CSC) sufriera una espectacular caída a cuatro kilómetros de meta, cuando iba directo a vestirse de líder. Por suerte, volvió a la carretera y entró en meta a 2:50 del ganador.
La segunda plaza en meta fue para el ruso Sergei Ivanov, a 49 segundos de Fothen. El grupo de los favoritos pasó con Igor Antón entre ellos a 56 segundos, por lo que el corredor vasco puso retener la prenda que le acredita como líder.
En la general Antón aventaja en seis segundos al luxemburgués Kim Kirchen (High Road) y en 18 al suizo Oliver Zaugg, del Gerolsteiner.
