El presidente del Banco Central Europeo (BCE), Jean-Claude Trichet, dijo hoy que el décimo aniversario de la entidad es un momento para "la profundización de la integración económica y financiera", uno de los próximos retos de la Unión Monetaria (UM),
En una ceremonia en la opera antigua de la capital financiera alemana Alte Oper, Trichet hizo hincapié en que "no es tiempo para la complacencia".
Trichet añadió que la UM se enfrenta "al rápido progreso tecnológico, la globalización en todas sus dimensiones, incluyendo la globalización financiera, y el envejecimiento de la población".
El BCE, creado el 1 de junio de 1998 en sustitución del Instituto Monetario Europeo (IME), forma junto con los bancos nacionales de los países que integran la zona del euro el Eurosistema, actualmente 15 naciones con un total de 320 millones de habitantes.
El 1 de enero de 2009, Eslovaquia introducirá el euro y pasará a formar parte del Eurosistema.
Trichet destacó que otro de los retos del BCE los próximos años es la ampliación de la zona euro.
Al acto para celebrar el aniversario asistió la elite financiera, económica y política europea.
En la ceremonia estuvieron presentes, entre otros, junto a Trichet, el presidente de la Comisión Europea (CE), José Manuel Barroso, y la canciller alemana, Angela Merkel
El banquero francés consideró que el Eurogrupo, los gobiernos de la zona del euro y la CE deben implementar completamente el Pacto de Estabilidad y Crecimiento (PEC), que definió como un "componente crucial de la Unión Económica y Monetaria en ausencia de un presupuesto federal europeo".
Trichet enfatizó también que los gobiernos deben dar importancia a la persecución de las reformas estructurales en línea con el proceso de Lisboa, ya que son decisivas para incrementar el crecimiento potencial de Europa a largo plazo.
