El número de muertos por el terremoto y el tsunami ocurrido hace justo hoy un mes en el noreste de Japón se elevó a 13.116 mientras otras 14.377 siguen desaparecidas, según el último recuento de la Policía nipona.
Además, en unos 2.350 refugios continúan evacuadas unas 147.000 personas, provenientes en su mayoría de las provincias de Miyagi, Iwate y Fukushima, las más afectadas por el desastre del 11 de marzo.
En las zonas costeras de estas provincias efectivos de las Fuerzas niponas de Auto Defensa y militares de EEUU llevaron a cabo este domingo una nueva búsqueda intensiva y recuperaron 99 cuerpos, mientras la Guardia Costera halló otros cuatro, informó hoy la agencia local Kyodo.
En Miyagi los fallecidos ascienden a 8.017 y hay 6.416 personas sin localizar, mientras en Iwate hay 3.811 muertos y 4.721 desaparecidos y en Fukushima las víctimas mortales son 1.226 y los desaparecidos 3.236.
Las labores de búsqueda de víctimas se extendieron el pasado jueves a la zona de exclusión de veinte kilómetros alrededor de central nuclear de Fukushima Daiichi, evacuada a instancias del Gobierno poco después de la catástrofe ante el incremento del nivel de radiación.
El portavoz del Gobierno, Yukio Edano, aseguró hoy que el riesgo de que se produzcan filtraciones importantes de radiactividad en la planta es "considerablemente menor" en la actualidad, tras un mes de trabajos para tratar de enfriar los cuatro reactores que presentan problemas.
Edano también insistió en que el radio de evacuación de veinte kilómetros sigue siendo "apropiado" y dijo que por ahora el Gobierno no ha tomado una decisión sobre su eventual ampliación.
Tras evacuar a los habitantes en un radio de veinte kilómetros de la planta, el Ejecutivo instó a aquellos residentes a entre veinte y treinta kilómetros a que no salieran de sus casas o abandonaran la zona.
