Un avión no tripulado de Estados Unidos lanzó el martes tres misiles en la región de Waziristán del Norte de Pakistán, un importante bastión talibán y de Al Qaeda en la frontera afgana, causando la muerte de cuatro paquistaníes, dijeron funcionarios.
Fue el tercer ataque con misiles contra militantes en el noroeste de Pakistán desde un frustrado asalto con bomba en el Times Square de Nueva York el 1 de mayo adjudicado a talibanes paquistaníes.
El asalto del martes ocurrió en la aldea de Dattakhel, unos 60 kilómetros al oeste de Miranshah, la principal ciudad de Waziristán del Norte.
"El ataque fue contra un vehículo que transportaba a militantes. Reportes iniciales sugieren que cuatro combatientes murieron", dijo un funcionario de la agencia de inteligencia de la región, quien declinó ser identificado.
Algunos aviones no pilotados aún vuelan sobre la zona, dijo un residente local a Reuters por teléfono.
Pakistán denuncia públicamente los ataques de aviones no pilotados de la CIA, diciendo que violan su soberanía y fomentan los sentimientos anti estadounidenses, que complican los esfuerzos de Islamabad por derrotar a la militancia islámica.
A nivel no oficial, sin embargo, analistas dicen que Pakistán está cooperando con Estados Unidos para identificar al menos algunos de los blancos militantes que son atacados por naves no pilotadas.
El domingo, al menos seis militantes perdieron la vida en un asalto similar en la misma área.
A fines del mes pasado, el líder talibán paquistaní, Hakimulá Mehsud, que según reportes había muerto en un asalto con avión no tripulado, apareció en videos de Internet amenazando con ataques suicidas en Estados Unidos.
