El director general del OIEA, Mohamed El Baradei, anunció hoy que un equipo de expertos del organismo nuclear de la ONU visitarán Siria a finales de este mes para verificar si estuvo construyendo una instalación atómica, tal y como afirma EEUU.
La visita de los inspectores se producirá entre el 22 y 24 de junio, precisó El Baradei en Viena durante su intervención de apertura de una reunión de la Junta de Gobernadores del Organismo Internacional de Energía Atómica (OIEA).
Israel bombardeó en septiembre pasado una instalación en el norte de Siria, y Estados Unidos denunció en abril que se trató de una instalación nuclear todavía no terminada, que tenía como objetivo fabricar material nuclear para fines militares.
El Baradei calificó hoy de "profundamente lamentable" que Israel y EEUU no hayan informado al OIEA a tiempo de la supuesta construcción de un reactor nuclear en Siria con la ayuda, según las autoridades estadounidenses, de Corea del Norte.
Asimismo, el responsable del organismo destacó que Siria está obligada bajo sus acuerdos de salvaguarda con el OIEA a informar de antemano a la ONU si quiere construir una instalación atómica.
Siria asegura que las acusaciones norteamericanas no tienen base alguna, mientras que EEUU dice que el supuesto reactor destruido en Al Kibar, en el desierto sirio, es muy parecido al de Yongbyon en Corea del Norte.
