El hasta ahora presidente del Parlament y número dos de ERC por Barcelona en los últimos comicios catalanes, Ernest Benach, ha invitado al presidente de ERC, Joan Puigcercós, a ceder el liderazgo del partido en el congreso extraordinario que celebrará la formación en otoño de 2011.
En declaraciones a RAC 1 recogidas por Efe, Benach ha dicho que el "objetivo prioritario número uno" de ERC en los próximos meses son las elecciones municipales, por lo que "es fundamental que haya tranquilidad" y no se abra en este preciso momento una "crisis" interna en el partido, abriendo el debate sucesorio.
"Los liderazgos, en el futuro", los debe "empezar a asumir gente de otra generación", ha apuntado, antes de aclarar que "yo apuesto por la renovación del partido absolutamente", aunque no sea en este preciso momento.
Según Benach, Puigcercós "ha cumplido un papel dificilísimo" porque "ha aguantado el partido, y ahora debe llevar el barco hasta el congreso extraordinario, y después, pese a que pueda tener un papel en ERC, nuestros referentes de cara al futuro deben ser otros" puesto que "hay muchos nombres" y gente "potentísima" dentro de Esquerra.
