Reino Unido ha acordado en principio elevar el número de soldados en Afganistán a 9.500, informó el miércoles el primer ministro Gordon Brown, lo que supone un incremento de 500 militares frente a los actualmente destinados al país asiático.
En las últimas semanas se han producido llamamientos a un cambio de estrategia en Afganistán tras un empeoramiento de la violencia en la guerra de ocho años liderada por Estados Unidos contra los talibanes, entre ellas la opción de enviar más tropas para mejorar la seguridad.
Brown dijo que Reino Unido enviaría más soldados siempre que el Gobierno afgano acelerara el entrenamiento de sus propias fuerzas y estuviera disponible el equipamiento militar adecuado.
"He acordado en principio un nuevo nivel de fuerzas británicas de 9.500 (militares) que entrará en vigor una vez que se cumplan estas condiciones", dijo Brown al Parlamento.
El Ejército británico es la segunda mayor presencia militar extranjera por detrás de EEUU. Hay más de 100.000 militares occidentales en la zona, la mayoría estadounidenses.
