El inventor de las hoy indispensables WWW, Tim Bernes-Lee, considera que su invención se debe en gran parte al ambiente y a las posibilidades que le brindó el Laboratorio Europeo de Física de Partículas (CERN), donde trabajaba.
En 1989, hace exactamente 20 años, Bernes-Lee, físico del CERN, tuvo una idea: lograr un sistema que intercambio de información entre científicos de diferentes universidades y laboratorios de todo el mundo.
Escribió una propuesta y se la presentó a sus jefes, quienes enseguida le animaron a llevarla a cabo y, en poco menos de un año, logró poner en marcha la "world wide web", más conocida como la web.
Hoy, durante la celebración del 20 aniversario de su creación, el científico estadounidense definió al CERN como "un lugar magnífico para empezar".
"Tenía el ambiente, los científicos, la tecnología, el apoyo, todo lo que yo necesitaba para desarrollar mi idea", explicó el físico, premio Príncipe de Asturias 2002.
Berners-Lee incluyó "los problemas del CERN" como uno de los aspectos que le ayudó a desarrollar su invento.
"Había diversos tipos de información, almacenada en diversos tipos de formatos, en distintos ordenadores que usaban diferentes programas y que se comunicaban con diferentes redes, y creía que eso debía unificarse", explicó.
Así nació la web, "con la idea de que sirviera desde el inicio para todo el mundo", explicó el físico.
Con la ayuda de Robert Cailliau, Berners-Lee perfeccionó el invento y posteriormente, por falta de recursos y con una visión democrática de su invento, lo puso a disposición de la comunidad internacional.
"La universalidad de la web fue la clave de su éxito inicial y posterior", explicó su inventor, quien sigue convencido de que "la web debe servir a la humanidad", por lo que ha creado una fundación con la que quiere lograr el acceso universal a la red.
En 1993 ya había más de 500 servidores conocidos, y los accesos a través de las WWW representaban el 1 por ciento del tráfico en internet.
En 1994, la web tenía 10.000 servidores y 10 millones de usuarios.
En la actualidad existen en el mundo 80 millones de sitios web en el mundo.
