El madrileño Chema Martínez consiguió hoy la victoria en la Copa de Europa de 10.000 metros con un tiempo de 27:57.61 por delante de los portugueses Rui Pedro Silva y José Rocha, mientras que España fue tercera por equipos.
Martínez, el atleta español que mejor resultado obtuvo en el maratón olímpico de Pekín (decimosexto), regresó hoy victorioso en Ribeira Brava (Madeira) en la distancia en la que fue campeón de Europa en Múnich 2002 y subcampeón continental en Gotemburgo 2006.
Martínez participaba hoy por sexta vez en la Copa de Europa de 10.000 metros y logró su segunda victoria individual, cinco años después de obtener la primera.
España volvió a subir al podio por equipos, como ha ocurrido en todas las ediciones anteriores excepto en 2006.
Completaron el equipo español en Madeira los debutantes Manuel Penas, que se clasificó quinto con 28:25.10; Javier Guerra, vigésimo tercero con 29:18.22, mientras que en categoría femenina España sólo alineó a Azucena Díaz, que terminó decimosexta con 35:02.88.
Los tres primeros clasificados tanto en hombres como en mujeres han obtenido la clasificación directa para participar en los campeonatos de Europa de Barcelona 2010, por lo que Chema Martínez tiene ya plaza asegurada en 10.000 y podrá elegir entre esta distancia o buscar la mínima en maratón.
Ninguno de los atletas lograron, en cambio, la mínima para los Mundiales de Berlín 2009, que es de 27:47.00, mientras que sí la consiguieron las cuatro primeras mujeres (31:45.00).
