La china Na Li, cuarta cabeza de serie, acabó con el sueño de la rusa Maria Sharapova de jugar la final del torneo de Birmingham, al derrotarla por un doble 6-4 tras hora y media de partido.
Sharapova, que ha estado nueve meses alejada de las pistas por una lesión en el hombro y que afrontó el torneo con sólo otras dos presencias, siempre buscando la mejor puesta a punto para Wimbledon, el gran reto tras su ausencia, no pudo en ningún momento con la jugadora china.
Sólo el tesón y la fuerza de voluntad de la siberiana le dieron el impulso necesario para estar enganchada al partido en todo momento.
Un ejemplo. Con 5-3 y servicio a favor de la china en el segundo set, Sharapova tuvo la garra suficiente para ganar el juego en blanco, aunque luego no pudo rematar su gesta.
La rival de Li será la vencedora de la otra semifinal que disputarán la india Sania Mirza y la eslovaca Magdalena Rybarikova, decimotercera favorita.
