La Agencia Central de Inteligencia (CIA) ha pedido permiso al gobierno del presidente Barack Obama para aumentar su campaña hasta ahora secreta de ataques con aviones no tripulados contra supuestos terroristas en Yemen, informó hoy el diario The Washington Post.
El diario, que citó como fuente de su información a funcionarios que no identifica, añadió que esa campaña prosigue aún cuando la CIA "no conoce las identidades de quienes podrían resultar muertos".
El permiso para usar esos ataques "permitiría que la Agencia golpee a objetivos exclusivamente sobre la base de información que indique patrones de comportamiento sospechoso, como las imágenes que muestren reuniones de militantes en reductos conocidos de Al Qaeda, o el trasiego de explosivos", señaló el Post.
Esta práctica, según el diario, "ha sido un elemento central del programa de aviones sin tripulación de la CIA en Pakistán por varios años".
Los informantes dijeron al Post que el director de la CIA, el general retirado David H. Petraeus, ha pedido permiso al gobierno del presidente Barack Obama para aplicar la táctica contra los aliados de Al Qaeda en Yemen "que han emergido como la amenaza terrorista más importante para EEUU".
Si el presidente Obama aprueba ese incremento "el cambio acelerará una campaña de ataques aéreos de EEUU en Yemen que ya ha alcanzado un nivel sin precedentes, con por lo menos ocho ataques en los últimos cuatro meses".
Hasta ahora Obama ha limitado las operaciones con aviones no tripulados en Yemen procurando impedir que EEUU se vea arrastrado a un conflicto regional.
