La candidatura conjunta de cinco científicos que trabajan en la creación de nuevos materiales al servicio de la humanidad "fundamentales" para el desarrollo sostenible y la lucha contra la pobreza ha sido galardonada hoy con el Premio Príncipe de Asturias de Investigación Científica y Técnica 2008.
La candidatura está integrada por el ingeniero estadounidense Robert Langer y por sus compatriotas químicos Tobin Marks y George M. Whitesides, así como por los japoneses Sumio Iijama (físico) y Shuji Nakamura (ingeniero), y fue propuesta por el químico Amador Menéndez, que formaba parte del jurado.
El acta del jurado, a la que ha dado lectura su presidente, el cirujano Enrique Moreno, destaca que los cinco científicos premiados se han convertido en "referentes universales" en la Ciencia de Materiales y la Nanotecnología.
Así, entre sus descubrimientos figuran los nanotubos de carbono, los diodos emisores de luz (LEDs), biomateriales que posibilitan la liberación inteligente de fármacos, la producción de tejidos y órganos para trasplantes o la fabricación de materiales en la nanoescala y el desarrollo de nuevos plásticos y materiales reciclables.
Estas técnicas resultan, según el jurado, "fundamentales para el desarrollo sostenible del planeta y la lucha contra la pobreza" y contribuyen "de forma decisiva" al ahorro energético y a la utilización de nuevas fuentes de energía.
Los nuevos conocimientos básicos y las técnicas y descubrimientos realizados por este grupo de científicos y las "fascinantes" tecnologías que han desarrollado están impulsando, destaca el acta, "una revolución sin precedentes" y resultan "de trascendental importancia para el progreso de la Humanidad".
A las últimas rondas de votaciones llegaron también la microbióloga estadounidense Rita R. Colwell, y los bioquímicos Erik de Clercq y Antonín Holý, belga y checo, respectivamente, por sus hallazgos sobre enfermedades virales como la varicela y el herpes.
Entre las 43 propuestas que optaban al galardón, procedentes de 23 países, figuraban también el Centro de Cirugía de Mínima Invasión, con sede en Cáceres, y la Organización Meteorológica Mundial.
En los últimos años fueron distinguidos con este premio Jane Goodall; los oncólogos Joan Massagué, Judah Folkman, Tony Hunter, Bert Vogelstein y Robert Weinberg, y el neurólogo portugués Antonio Damasio, mientras que en 2006 fue para el físico Juan Ignacio Cirac y el año pasado recayó en Peter Lawrence y Ginés Morata.
