Al menos cinco soldados estadounidenses y tres policías iraquíes murieron este viernes en un atentado suicida con un camión bomba contra una base conjunta del Ejército de EEUU y de la Policía iraquí en Mosul, 400 kilómetros al norte de Irak.
Fuentes del Ministerio de Interior iraquí informaron del ataque, que dejó al menos sesenta heridos.
En un principio, fuentes policiales había señalado que había sido contra una comisaría y había causado dos muertos y 36 heridos.
Por otro lado, el portavoz del Ministerio del Interior, general Abdelkarim Jalaf, dijo a la cadena de televisión estatal Al Iraqiya que el camión llevaba unos 1.000 kilos de explosivos y estalló antes de llegar a su objetivo por los disparos efectuados por los efectivos de seguridad, apostados en los accesos a la base.
Se trata del ataque más mortífero en el que hay implicados militares estadounidenses desde el perpetrado el 10 de marzo de 2008 cuando cinco uniformados fallecieron en un atentado suicida contra una patrulla del Ejército de EEUU en el oeste de Bagdad.
Con estas víctimas, el número de soldados estadounidenses muertos en Irak, desde la invasión de marzo de 2003, asciende ya 4.271 uniformados. Este atentado ocurre en un momento en el que EEUU se prepara para comenzar el repliegue de sus tropas del país árabe con la retirada el próximo septiembre de 12.000 de los 147.000 militares presentes en Irak.
