Los homosexuales en Italia se sienten desprotegidos por los políticos. En lo que va de año ha habido más de un centenar de agresiones a ciudadanos por el hecho de ser gays, pero el Parlamento ha dejado pasar la ocasión de aprobar una ley que hubiera convertido la homofobia en un agravante penal por 285 votos en contra y 225 a favor. Para la comisaria de Derechos Humanos de la ONU, Nancy Pillay,se trata "de un paso atrás".
La mayor asociación gay, Arcigay, ha cargado contra los partidos de la derecha por rechazar la ley y especialmente por los argumentos del partido de centro católico UDC, que niega que se deba proteger a los homosexuales. Arcigay también se siente decepcionada por el partido de izquierda que presentó la proposición de ley, el Partido Demócrata (PD), por no haber concedido más tiempo para discutir el texto, como lepedía la derecha.
La ministra de Igualdad de Oportunidades del Gobierno Berlusconi, Mara Carfagna, promete que en los próximos seis meses presentará un nuevo proyecto contra la homofobia. Pide "tiempo" para convencer a los suyos y trata de calmar de paso a la Iglesia italiana, contraria al reconocimiento de las uniones gays. Su propuesta, dice, no servirá de precedente para regular estas uniones en Italia ni siquiera hay una ley sobre las parejas de hecho.
Para Arcigay, estas promesas son "una farsa", pues considera que si la ley se hubiera discutido más a fondo se hubiera podido tener un instrumento contra la homofobia en cuestión de semanas y, en cambio, ahora deberá esperar como mínimos varios meses.
