Las personas con enfermedadespulmonares crónicas suelen tener bajo peso o estar malnutridos.Un nuevo estudio revela que la orientación nutricional lespermite aumentar algo de peso y mejorar algunas habilidadesfuncionales.
Para el estudio, el equipo de la doctora C. ElizabethWeekes, del Hospital St. Thomas en Londres, reunió a 59personas con enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica (EPOC), untérmino paraguas para trastornos pulmonares como el enfisema yla bronquitis crónica.
Al azar, los participantes recibieron asesoramientonutricional sobre fortificación de alimentos o un folleto conconsejos alimentarios (grupo de control). El asesoramiento duróseis meses y el equipo controló a los participantes duranteotros seis.
El consumo diario de calorías y proteína fuesignificativamente mayor en el grupo que había recibido elasesoramiento que en la cohorte de control, según publicó larevista Thorax.
Quienes recibieron orientación aumentaron unos de 2 kilosde peso en los primeros seis meses y lo mantuvieron, mientrasque el otro grupo adelgazó unos 3 kilos en los 12 meses delestudio.
Asimismo, las habilidades funcionales y los síntomas, comola disnea, disminuyeron en los pacientes que habían recibidoasesoramiento, y muchos de los cambios se mantuvieron duranteel seguimiento.
En cambio, el equipo observó que la intervenciónalimentaria no tuvo efecto alguno en la función respiratoria oen la fuerza muscular.
Los autores opinan que se necesitan más estudios paraidentificar qué pacientes con EPOC son más propensos abeneficiarse con el asesoramiento nutricional y los consejossobre la fortificación alimentaria.
