Los médicos del hospital Severance de la Universidad de Yonsei, en Seúl, se han convertido en los primeros que desconectan a una mujer en coma de la máquina que la mantenía con vida tras recibir una orden judicial. El caso, según los analistas, abrirá un debate en Corea del Sur sobre el derecho a morir. Kim Ok-kyung, de 77 años, llevaba un año en estado vegetativo y el tribunal decidió que mantenerle los cuidados no serviría para recuperarla.
Un tribunal de Seúl aprobó el año pasado la solicitud de la familia de Kim de retirarle el apoyo vital, diciendo que los médicos debían respetar la voluntad de la paciente y la familia si el estado del enfermo garantizaba que cualquier tratamiento adicional no serviría para curarlo.
Según los medios locales, ésta es la primera vez que un tribunal surcoreano acepta la solicitud de una familia para permitir que una paciente "muera con dignidad". El hospital apeló la decisión pero el Tribunal Supremo ratificó en mayo la decisión del tribunal inferior. "Este caso ayudará a otras familias en situaciones similares", dijo Kwak Sook-young, director de bioética y seguridad del Ministerio de Salud, Asistencia y Asuntos Familiares del país asiático.
Actualmente, las familias que quieren la retirada del apoyo vital en casi todos los casos deben presentarse ante un tribunal judicial para buscar la aprobación a sus peticiones.
Expertos en ética médica han pedido a las autoridades que establezcan un sistema que determine quién puede tomar la decisión sobre cuándo desconectar el apoyo vital a un paciente y cómo respetar los deseos de los enfermos.
