La Corte Penal Internacional (CPI) confirmó hoy la acusación contra el ex vicepresidente congolés Jean-Pierre Bemba por crímenes de guerra y contra la humanidad cometidos en la República Centroafricana entre octubre de 2002 y marzo de 2003.
En un comunicado, la Corte con sede en La Haya anunció la próxima apertura de juicio contra el antiguo líder del Movimiento de Liberación de Congo (MLC).
Según la cámara encargada de evaluar el caso, hay evidencias suficientes para considerar a Bemba criminalmente responsable de cinco cargos de asesinato, violación y pillaje, cometidos en su calidad de jefe militar y constituyentes de crímenes de guerra y contra la humanidad.
Los magistrados declinaron, sin embargo, juzgar al militar congolés por otros tres cargos propuestos por la fiscalía, de torturas y ataques a la dignidad personal de sus víctimas, al considerar que no había pruebas suficientes.
Los jueces también rechazaron la acusación de corresponsabilidad en crímenes de guerra junto al antiguo presidente de la República Centroafricana Ange-Félix Patassé, que habrían cometido usando las tropas del Movimiento de Liberación de Congo (MLC), liderado por Bemba.
El acusado fue detenido en mayo del año pasado por las autoridades belgas, y transferido a la CPI en julio.
