La retirada por lesión del francés Gilles Simon, que partía como decimoquinto favorito del Abierto de Australia, ha supuesto un cambio en el cuadro masculino, que ha afectado al español David Ferrer, que ocupa ahora la plaza del jugador galo en la parte superior de la llave.
En principio Ferrer había sido sorteado en la parte de abajo, como favorito número 17, y tenía como primer rival al italiano Andreas Seppi, pero la baja del francés le ha hecho cambiar de lado, y ahora se enfrentará contra el portugués Frederico Gil. Este cambio no ha favorecido demasiado al jugador de Xavea que circulará por la parte del suizo Roger Federer, con quien podría enfrentarse en octavos de final.
La renuncia de Simon ha elevado al gigante estadounidense John Isner, ganador del torneo de Auckland, al puesto de favorito 33, y será el americano el que se enfrente ahora contra el italiano Seppi.
En total son 17, trece hombres y cuatro mujeres, los españoles que compiten este año en el Abierto de Australia. Cuatro de ellos inician mañana el torneo con Rafael Nadal, defensor del título contra el australiano Peter Luczak, Feliciano López ante el uruguayo Pablo Cuevas, Guillermo García López contra el suizo Stanislas Wawrinka y María José Martínez, con la rusa Evgeniya Rodina.
