El déficit federal estadounidense alcanzó un máximo histórico de 1,42 billones de dólares durante el año fiscal que finalizó el 30 de septiembre debido a una caída de los ingresos públicos y a un masivo incremento del gasto.
El dato dado a conocer hoy por el Gobierno estadounidense más que triplica la también cifra récord alcanzada el año pasado.
El monto representa un diez por ciento del Producto Interior Bruto (PIB), el nivel más elevado desde la II Guerra Mundial.
El presidente de EE.UU., Barack Obama, se ha comprometido a reducir el déficit una vez que acabe la recesión y la tasa de desempleo comience a disminuir.
El reducir los números rojos implicará la adopción de medidas impopulares como el incremento de los impuestos, lo que lleva a los analistas a cuestionar si Obama estará dispuesto a avanzar en esa dirección.
Las estadísticas dadas a conocer hoy muestran que los ingresos del Gobierno cayeron un 16,6 por ciento, hasta los 2,10 billones de dólares.
La contracción refleja una menor recaudación de impuestos debido a que muchos estadounidenses perdieron sus puestos de trabajo o sufrieron un recorte en sus salarios.
La recaudación fiscal entre las empresas también se redujo, ya que la recesión estrechó los márgenes de ganancias empresariales.
Por su parte, el gasto público aumentó un 18,2 por ciento, hasta los 3,52 billones de dólares.
La Casa Blanca defendió las partidas de gasto extraordinarias, que incluyen el paquete de estímulo fiscal por valor de 787.000 millones de dólares aprobado en febrero, y se comprometió a reducir el déficit en el futuro.
"Resultaba crítico actuar" para ayudar a la economía a salir de la crisis, afirmó el director presupuestario de la Casa Blanca, Peter Orszag, en un comunicado.
"El presidente reconoce que necesitamos volver a colocar al país en una senda fiscal sostenible", añadió Orszag.
