Estados Unidos acumuló un déficit presupuestario récord de 956.800 millones de dólares en la primera mitad del año fiscal 2009, triplicando con creces el saldo negativo del ejercicio anterior, ya que el gasto de los rescates financieros subió con fuerza.
El Tesoro dijo el viernes también que el Gobierno registró en marzo un déficit fiscal de 192.270 millones de dólares, un montante récord para el mes, frente al saldo negativo de 48.210 millones de dólares en igual mes de 2008.
Los desembolsos de marzo se dispararon a 321.230 millones de dólares, incluyendo 46.000 millones gastados para inyectar capital en las compañías hipotecarias controladas por el Gobierno Fannie Mae y Freddie Mac y otros 10.600 millones para pagar beneficios por desempleo.
La cifra de gastos se compara con una de 227.020 millones vista en marzo de 2008.
Los desembolsos de marzo hubieran sido incluso mayores, de no haber sido porque el Gobierno reprogramó cerca de 15.000 millones de dólares en pagos de beneficios para febrero porque el 1 de marzo cayó domingo.
Los ingresos de marzo cayeron con fuerza porque el deterioro de la economía mermó la recaudación impositiva. Los ingresos bajaron un 28 por ciento a 128.960 millones desde los 178.820 millones del mismo mes del año anterior.
Además del apoyo de capital a Fannie y a Freddie, la Casa Blanca debió comprar 17.380 millones de dólares en activos respaldados por hipotecas a empresas respaldas por el Gobierno, sumando un total de 119.200 millones para la primera mitad del año fiscal 2009, que comenzó el 1 de octubre.
