El argentino Juan Martín del Potro, cuarto cabeza de serie, venció al estadounidense Michael Russell, por 6-4, 6-4, 3-6 y 6-2, y avanzó a la segunda ronda del Abierto de Australia.
Cuarto finalista el pasado año, el jugador de Tandil fue uno de los pocos afortunados hoy por poder acabar su partido en una jornada de mucha lluvia que ya ha obligado a la organización a suspender doce encuentros del cuadro femenino.
El duelo se disputó en la pista Hisense, la segunda de importancia del recinto de Melbourne Park, bajo techo, justo después de la victoria del estadounidense Andy Roddick sobre el holandés Thiemo de Bakker.
Del Potro, ganador del Abierto de EE.UU. y finalista de la Copa Masters el año pasado, se había mantenido con dudas hasta casi última hora debido a una lesión en su muñeca derecha, pero confiando en sus posibilidades saltó a la pista para imponerse a Russell, 79 del mundo, en tres horas.
En ese tiempo, Del Potro anotó 21 saques directos y 49 golpes ganadores. Ahora, si su muñeca se lo sigue permitiendo, se medirá contra el ganador del encuentro entre el francés Arnaud Clement y el estadounidense James Blake.
