Un destructor de la Marina de guerra de Estados Unidos vigila hoy a los piratas que retienen en un bote al capitán de un buque de contenedores asaltado frente a las costas de Somalia, informó la compañía naviera.
Kevin Speers, portavoz de la firma Maers, dueña del barco Maersk Alabama que opera con bandera estadounidense, indicó que los piratas se llevaron como rehén al capitán, Richard Phillips, cuando escaparon de la nave de 17.000 toneladas.
El portavoz añadió que el destructor Brainbridge había llegado a la zona en las proximidades del Cuerno de África. La tripulación estadounidense del buque de contenedores había recuperado ayer el control de la nave.
El Brainbridge, con una tripulación de medio centenar de oficiales y aproximadamente 500 soldados, es una de varias unidades navales de Estados Unidos y otros países que patrullan el Golfo de Adén y las aguas del océano Índico en torno a Somalia.
Según los medios de comunicación de EEUU, el capitán Phillips se ofreció como cautivo de los piratas para garantizar la seguridad de los otros tripulantes del Maersk Alabama.
Es probable que los piratas traten de alcanzar una nave nodriza, una de las embarcaciones mayores que remolcan las lanchas rápidas y las reabastecen durante las incursiones de asalto a los barcos mercantes que transitan por la zona.
