Un estudio realizado enEuropa revela que la dieta mediterránea reduce el riesgo dedesarrollar cáncer estomacal.
"Esto se suma a las evidencias del papel de esa dieta en lareducción del riesgo de cáncer y respalda la necesidad deseguir promoviéndola donde está desapareciendo", señaló elequipo del doctor Carlos A. González, del Instituto Catalán deOncología, en Barcelona, España.
La dieta tradicional en Grecia, Italia y otros paísesmediterráneos tiene varios beneficios para la salud,escribieron los autores en American Journal of ClinicalNutrition, incluida la protección del cáncer.
Pero existen menos datos sobre cómo su consumo influye elriesgo de sufrir ciertos tumores. El equipo se concentró en elcáncer gástrico, la segunda causa oncológica de muerte en elmundo.
Para conocer si la dieta protegería de ese cáncer, elequipo analizó los datos del estudio European ProspectiveInvestigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) de 485.044hombres y mujeres, de entre 35 y 70 años, de 10 paíseseuropeos.
A todos se les asignó una calificación según una escala de18 puntos según cuán cercana era su alimentación a la dietamediterránea, rica en frutas, vegetales, legumbres, pescado,cereales y aceite de oliva, con un consumo relativamente bajode carnes rojas y productos lácteos.
Durante nueve años de seguimiento, 449 participantesdesarrollaron cáncer gástrico.
Las personas que tenían una alimentación más cercana a lamediterránea eran un 33 por ciento menos propensas adesarrollar la enfermedad que aquellas con patronesalimentarios más alejados del ideal mediterráneo.
El riesgo de cáncer gástrico bajó un 5 por ciento por cadapunto más.
El 23 por ciento de las personas con cáncer gástricosobrevivirá cinco años. "Por lo tanto, para el manejo efectivodel cáncer hay que identificar las recomendaciones alimentariasque reducirían su incidencia", concluyó el equipo.
